Master Gardner Peter

Peter Scantalides has been an organic gardener for over 30 years. He grows a variety of vegetables and herbs from seed including heirloom tomatoes, basil, garlic, eggplant, squash, beans, cucumbers, lettuce, broccoli, arugula, spinach and other vegetables. He grows these vegetables in his large garden in Lynnfield, MA using his own compost derived from organic matter such as leaves, eggshells, coffee grounds and other natural amendments without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Peter starts seeds indoors in his basement beginning in February and uses his large greenhouse as a large cold frame until the temperature is such that the seedlings can be moved slowly outside and eventually transplanted into the garden.

Peter specializes in heirloom tomatoes, garlic (which is planted in October and harvested in July in the Northeast (USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6) as well as eggplant, Mideast cousa squash, and a number of greens.

Currently Peter has flats of celery, lettuce, spinach, kale, asian mustard greens, beets, carrots, oregano, and parsley growing in his basement. These will be moved out as the temperature moderates and flats of broccoli and swiss chard will be begun to be followed by eggplant, basil, and tomatoes and eventually squash and cucumbers.
